Scaffold Body Truck Insurance
cover for lorries built to carry tube, boards and fittings between the yard and the job
Cover for a lorry built to carry scaffolding. The vehicle and body are insured together, while the tube, boards and fittings on it are treated as goods rather than as part of the lorry.
- Scaffold bodies and dropsides
- Load security addressed
- Materials cover arranged alongside
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerScaffold body insurance covers the lorries that move tube, boards and fittings. The body itself is simple, but the load is heavy, awkward and worth stealing, and it is handled by hand several times a day. Insurers look at load security, the site access and what the yard holds. Tell us the lorries and the work, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.
General building loads instead? Our dropside truck insurance page covers those.
At a glance
Scaffold Lorries, in Brief
Six things that shape the terms on a scaffolding vehicle.
- The body is simple
- The load is the complication
- Tube and fittings are stolen
- Resale value is real
- Loads overhang
- Marked and declared
- Gangs travel with the lorry
- Passenger arrangements matter
- Sites are the destination
- Access damage is routine
- The yard holds stock
- Material storage is a separate risk
The basics
What a Scaffold Load Changes on the Policy
The vehicle side is ordinary. Scaffolding is unusual because the load is dense, handled constantly and attractive to thieves, and because gangs often travel with it.
Damage to the vehicle
Cab, chassis and body.
The materials carried
Goods cover, arranged alongside.
Overhang and securing
Declared and marked.
Crew travelling
Who rides in the cab.
Site access
Where the lorry has to reach.
Theft
Both vehicle and load.
How it works
Four Steps to Getting Scaffold Body Quoted
Four steps. Describe a scaffold lorry, name the drivers, explain the work, then choose the level of cover.
You list what you run
Everything that makes a scaffold lorry what it is.
You name the drivers
Or agree an age and licence condition.
You explain the job
Scaffold erection, dismantling, yard runs or hire delivery.
You pick the level
Third party upwards, with the excess you want.
What it covers
What a Scaffold Lorry Policy Covers
Standard goods vehicle sections. The two worth arranging deliberately are cover for the materials in transit and cover for the stock sitting in the yard.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party liability | The base of every policy | Others’ injuries and property |
| Fire, theft and attempted theft | From the middle level up | Locks, alarms and storage terms |
| Own damage | Comprehensive | Damage to a scaffold lorry on your own schedule |
| Windscreens | Usually part of comprehensive | A separate, smaller excess |
| Roadside and recovery | Where offered | Ask what happens to a loaded vehicle |
| Legal cover | Bought as an extra | Disputes and uninsured loss recovery |
| Goods carried | Outside motor cover | Insured by a goods in transit policy |
Materials are the recurring loss. Tube and fittings disappear from sites and from lorries with depressing regularity, and the motor policy does nothing about it, so goods cover is worth arranging rather than assuming.
What it leaves out
What a Scaffold Lorry Policy Leaves to the Contractor
The limits follow the declaration. Anything outside the description, the use class or the driving terms puts your own cover at risk, though an injured third party is still paid and the cost recovered afterwards.
Anything not on the list
A new vehicle is covered once it is added, not before.
Drivers the terms exclude
Licence category, age and experience.
Paid carriage of goods
A standard policy does not stretch to it.
Equipment fitted later
Declare cranes, tail lifts and bodywork.
Cargo
A motor policy insures the vehicle, not the goods.
Theft of tube and fittings from the lorry
Materials need their own cover.
Kinds of scaffold body
Purpose-Built Bodies, Dropsides and Crane-Mounted Lorries
Most scaffolders use an ordinary body with modifications, and the modifications are what the insurer wants described.
Purpose-built scaffold bodies
Racks and gates for tube.
Dropsides on scaffold work
The common general-purpose choice.
Crane-mounted scaffold lorries
Loading without a gang.
Crew cab scaffold lorries
Gang and materials together.
Light scaffold vehicles
Small jobs and domestic work.
Scaffold trailers
Extra length behind the lorry.

Who it suits
Who Runs Scaffold Lorries
Scaffolding is a trade with its own vehicles, and the operators range from two-man outfits to contractors running a yard and a fleet.
Scaffolding contractors
Erection and dismantling.
Scaffold hire companies
Materials out to other trades.
Access specialists
Temporary roofs and edge protection.
Event and stage builders
Temporary structures.
Building contractors
Their own access equipment.
Small scaffold firms
One lorry and a gang.
Running one lorry and a gang? See owner driver operators insurance.
Scaffold body or dropside
A Purpose-Built Body vs an Ordinary Dropside
Both carry scaffolding. A purpose-built body handles the load better and costs more, which shows on both sides of the policy.
| Scaffold body | Dropside | |
|---|---|---|
| Load handling | Racks and gates for tube | Loose stacking behind sides |
| Body value | Higher | Lower |
| Load security | Built in | Straps and judgement |
| Flexibility | Scaffolding mainly | Anything that fits |

What Sets the Price on a Scaffold Lorry
Vehicle value, the loads carried, site exposure, crew arrangements and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why material theft dominates
Tube and fittings have a ready resale market, and losses from lorries and sites are frequent enough that insurers treat the goods cover as the harder half of the conversation.
Why crew arrangements are asked
Gangs travelling in the cab or a crew cab add passengers to a working vehicle, and how many people travel and where they sit is something an underwriter would rather establish at the quote.
What the quote is rated on

Mark the materials
Identifiable tube is harder to sell.
Arrange goods cover
The motor policy will not pay.
Fit a tracker
Loaded lorries are stolen whole.
The details
Four Things a Scaffolder Should Confirm
Most disputes over a scaffold lorry trace back to the description rather than the accident. Four habits prevent them.
Keep the description current
Equipment fitted later still needs declaring.
Check entitlements regularly
Categories, medicals and endorsements.
Secure and mark overhanging loads
Overhang is a condition, not a habit.
Notify quickly
Late notification is a common reason for a dispute.

What a Broker Asks About a Scaffold Lorry
Gather these six before you ask. Everything else on a quote for a scaffold lorry follows from them.

Everything that describes a scaffold lorry.
Who drives
Licence categories, ages and records.
The job
Scaffold erection, dismantling, hire delivery or yard runs.
Weights
Gross vehicle weight and payload.
Where it sleeps
Scaffold yard, compound or a secured depot.
What has happened before
Claims over recent years.
Comparing
Reading Two Quotes on the Scaffold Terms
The price is the last thing to look at. The cover, the excess, the driving terms and the fit to what a scaffold lorry actually does decide whether the policy works.
The protection
- Level across the policy
- Recovery when loaded
- Windscreens
The excesses
- Compulsory amount
- Voluntary amount
- Any extra for inexperience
The driver basis
- Licence category
- Years held
- Temporary cover
The load and the work
- Materials in transit
- Overhang conditions
- Crew travelling permitted
Ask whether the load is insured at all. It is a separate cover on most schedules. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

FAQs
Scaffold Body Truck Insurance FAQs
Answers on tube and fitting loads, overhang, theft of materials and site access.
Is the scaffolding on the lorry insured?
Not by the motor policy. Tube, boards and fittings are goods, so they need a transit cover of their own, and given how often they are stolen that is a cover worth having rather than assuming.
What about materials left on a site?
Those sit outside the vehicle policy entirely and usually need a contract works or materials arrangement. It is one of the most common gaps in a small scaffolding firm’s cover.
Can the gang travel in the lorry?
Where the vehicle is built for it, yes, and a crew cab is normal on this work. Tell the insurer how many travel, because carrying employees changes the liability picture.
How is overhang treated?
It is allowed within the usual marking and notification rules, and insurers expect those to be followed. A long load that was not marked is the kind of detail examined closely after an incident.
Does a crane-mounted scaffold lorry cost more?
Generally, because the arm adds value and a lifting activity. It also reduces manual handling, which helps elsewhere, but the motor policy still prices the equipment.
Is a scaffold body worth declaring separately?
Yes. A purpose-built body with racks and gates is worth considerably more than a plain deck, and the declared value should reflect that rather than the bare chassis.
Are scaffold lorries stolen often?
Loaded ones are targeted, because the vehicle and the load are both saleable. Tracking and a secured yard are the two controls insurers ask about most on this trade.
Does event scaffolding differ from construction?
To an insurer, somewhat. Event work means tight schedules, public venues and temporary structures, which brings a different liability profile alongside the same vehicle risk.
Is the cargo insured by this policy?
No, and it is the most common misunderstanding on commercial motor. The vehicle is covered; the load is not. Goods in transit cover fills that gap and is normally bought alongside.
Do we need hire and reward cover?
Only if the vehicle carries goods for payment. Moving your own stock or materials is own goods use. Where a vehicle does both, it has to be insured for the wider of the two.
Does the driver need a specific licence?
The category has to match the weight being driven. Insurers also ask how long it has been held, because experience moves the price more than most operators expect.
How should we judge a quote on a scaffold lorry?
Beyond the price: the level of cover, the total excess, recovery of a loaded vehicle, the driving terms, and whether any equipment fitted to the vehicle has been declared and accepted.
Can several vehicles share one policy?
Yes, and most operators end up there. One schedule, one renewal date and one claims record, with each vehicle type rated separately inside it. Adding the next one then becomes an adjustment rather than a new policy.
Does the yard affect what we pay?
Noticeably. Overnight location carries the theft risk, and insurers rate a secured compound quite differently from a street or an open hardstanding. It is one of the few levers fully within your control.
What is the process for adding a vehicle?
A mid-term adjustment charged pro rata for the rest of the year. Do it before the vehicle turns a wheel, because cover starts when the insurer accepts it and not a moment earlier.
Do we need recovery cover for a scaffold lorry?
Many operators find they do. Check whether the service recovers a loaded vehicle, how far it will take it and whether a replacement is offered, because those three points are where policies differ most.
