Sprite Caravan Insurance

cover for a first caravan, where nobody has any caravan history to go on yet

Cover for a Sprite touring caravan in its own right. It answers for sudden damage, theft and storm, and for a first-time owner it is rated on the value, the storage and the towing history rather than on any caravan record.

  • The usual first caravan
  • No caravan history needed
  • Storage still leads
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerSprite is where a great many people start, which makes the first policy as much of a question as the van. With no caravan claims history behind you, an insurer leans on the things it can see: the value, the storage, the security and the car licence history of whoever tows it. All four are worth getting right from the outset. Tell us the van and the storage, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

Looking at the wider range? Our Swift caravan insurance page covers the rest of it.

The basics

How a Sprite Is Judged at the Quote

On a first caravan there is nothing to look back on, so the questions are all about what can be established now: what the van is worth, where it will stand and who will be towing it.

The van itself

Make, model, year and berth.

What it is worth

Replacement cost today.

Where it is kept

A drive, a yard or a graded site.

Security fitted

Hitchlock, clamp, alarm, tracker.

Where you take it

UK sites, rallies or Europe.

Who tows it

Owners and anybody else permitted.

How it works

A Sprite Quoted in Four Steps

Four questions cover most of it: the van, the value, the security and where it sleeps. The last of those carries more weight than owners expect.

  1. Describe the van

    Make, model, age and value.

  2. Describe how it is used

Weekends away, long tours, rallies, a seasonal pitch or European trips.

  3. List the security fitted

    Hitchlock, clamp, alarm, tracker.

  4. Read the terms

Not just the premium at the bottom.

What it covers

The Parts of the Policy a Sprite Relies On

The sections that answer for sudden damage to the van, what is inside it, and the awning if you add it.

The sections a Sprite caravan policy carries
SectionWhere it sitsWhat to know
Impact and accidental damageThe main sectionIncluding damage while manoeuvring
Fire and theftIncludedStorage and security are rated
Weather and floodIncludedA sited or stored van is exposed
ContentsSub-limitedDeclare anything of real value
Awning and porchUsually addedHigh wind is the usual cause
Use in EuropeConfirm the limitCounted in days, not trips
Public liabilityIncludedInjury or damage at the pitch

Buy the security with the van. A hitchlock and a wheelclamp are the two things a first-time owner most often means to get round to. They are usually a condition of the theft cover from day one, not from whenever they are fitted.

What it leaves out

The Losses a Sprite Policy Turns Down

None of this is small print for its own sake. These are the gaps that catch caravan owners out, and several of them close by declaring something at the quote.

Water getting in over time

Damp is excluded or heavily limited on most contracts.

Frost and freezing damage

Unless the van was drained down as required.

Theft from an unapproved storage site

Where the policy names a site or a grade.

Items outside the van

Awning contents, cycles and gas bottles may need adding.

Hiring it out for payment

A different use, and a different policy.

Gradual water ingress

The commonest reason a caravan claim is refused.

The Sprite range

The Sprite Layouts Being Towed Today

Sprite covers the entry end of the market with a straightforward range, and the layout you pick matters more at the quote than the range name.

Two berth tourers

The classic first van.

Four and six berth family layouts

Space for a growing family.

Light models for smaller cars

Matching the outfit.

Used Sprite vans

A common first purchase.

Vans with added equipment

Movers and awnings declared.

Vans taken abroad

Declared, with a day limit.

Who it suits

The People Who Choose a Sprite

Sprite is the entry point to the trade, so the people buying one are usually doing it for the first time or keeping the cost sensible on purpose.

First-time caravanners

The largest group by far.

Young families

Space without the price.

Owners with modest tow cars

Lighter layouts.

Used-van buyers

Starting second-hand.

Owners returning to caravanning

After some years away.

Occasional tourers

A few weeks a year.

First policy or fifth

A Sprite on Site vs One on the Road

A first caravan policy is priced differently from a fifth, and knowing why makes the first renewal a good deal more useful.

The Factors Behind a Sprite Premium

The van, its value, where it is kept, the security fitted and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.

Why the first policy leans on the car

With no caravan record to read, an insurer looks at the driving history of whoever tows it: licence years, claims and convictions on the car. It is the nearest available proxy and it carries real weight on a first policy.

Why storage is decided before the van

Plenty of first-time buyers choose the caravan and then work out where to put it. Doing it the other way round is better: storage is the largest single factor in the price and it is the one thing you can settle in advance.

Store it behind a barrier

The strongest single lever.

Fit the devices asked for

And use them every time.

Value it for replacement

Not for what you paid.

The conditions

Four Things a Sprite Owner Must Settle

Conditions are where caravan claims are won and lost. The four below come up repeatedly.

  1. Meet the declared security standard

    Clamps, hitchlocks, alarms and trackers.

  2. Register the van properly

A CRiS number links it to you.

  3. Keep to the storage arrangement

    Moving it changes the terms.

  4. Keep the van serviced and damp-checked

It will not create cover, but it protects one.

Quote checklist

Pull This Together for a Sprite Quote

None of it is hard to find. Having it to hand is the difference between a quick quote and a drawn-out one.

Make, model and berth

Make, model, year, berth and the CRiS number.

Where it sleeps

A drive, a garage, a farm yard or a graded storage site.

Value and contents value

Two separate figures.

Security specification

What is fitted and what could be.

Everybody who tows it

Ages and licence history.

Previous claims

Including on the towing car.

Comparing

Setting Two Sprite Quotes Against Each Other

Set two quotes side by side and work through this. The differences will be here rather than in the premium.

The settlement basis

  • New for old while the van is young enough
  • Agreed value on older or rarer vans
  • Market value, and what that means in practice

Where you can use it

  • Days permitted in Europe
  • Rallies and unlisted sites
  • Seasonal pitches and long stays

On this van specifically

  • Settlement basis on this van
  • Contents and awning limits
  • Storage and security conditions

Ask how a total loss would be settled. It is the question owners forget to ask. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

Keeping Sprite Cover Affordable

The levers are storage, security, an accurate value and a clean record. We publish no savings figures.

Move it to a graded site

Storage drives the price.

Fit a tracker

Recovery odds change the rating.

Keep the value current

Under-insuring costs more later.

Build clean years

A caravan bonus is worth protecting.

Service it and check for damp

History supports a claim.

Compare every renewal

This market moves a great deal.

FAQs

Sprite Caravan Insurance FAQs

Answers on the towing car, new for old, storage, security devices and damp.

Do I need insurance for a first caravan?

Nothing obliges you to hold it, unlike the car towing it, but no other policy answers for a stolen or storm-damaged caravan. The replacement cost falls on the owner, which is why nearly everybody buys cover.

Will my car insurance help at all?

Only for third-party liability while the van is hitched and moving. Damage to the Sprite itself, theft of it and anything that happens once it is unhitched all sit outside the car policy.

Does having no caravan history count against me?

Not particularly. Everybody starts without one, and insurers look at the towing driver’s car record instead. Storage and security do more to a first quote than the absence of a caravan bonus does.

What should I buy alongside the van?

A hitchlock and a wheelclamp, before the first trip rather than after. Both are usually conditions of the theft cover, and a claim made before they were fitted is a difficult conversation.

Where should I keep it?

Somewhere secure, and ideally decide that before you buy. A gated driveway or a graded storage site both price better than an open roadside space, and storage is the largest single factor in the premium.

Can I build a no claims bonus on a caravan?

Many insurers run one separately from the car. It takes a few years to become worth much, so weigh a small claim in the first season against what it would cost you over the following ones.

Is a used Sprite a sensible first van?

A great many people start with one. Check for damp, look at the service history and insure for what an equivalent would cost today rather than for what you paid, which on a used van is often less.

What is the one thing first-time owners miss?

Damp. It is excluded on every caravan as a gradual loss, so an annual service with a damp check is what protects the van and supports you when something sudden does happen.

What does a caravan policy actually cover?

Sudden damage to the van, theft, storm and flood, a limit for contents and usually liability while it is pitched. What it does not cover is gradual deterioration, which includes damp.

How should I value the caravan?

On what it would cost to replace with an equivalent, not on what you paid. Values move, and a figure that was right three years ago will usually be short today.

Are my belongings inside it insured?

Up to a limit, which is separate from the van itself and often lower than owners expect. Anything of real value is worth declaring individually rather than hoping the general limit stretches.

Can I tour in Europe on it?

Usually, once it is declared, and commonly with a cap on the number of days. Tell the insurer before you go rather than assuming the cover travels with you.

What happens if it is stolen from storage?

The policy responds, provided the security you declared was in place and the site is the one on the schedule. Those two conditions decide most caravan theft claims.

Should I fit a tracker?

On a higher-value van it is usually worth it. Recovery rates improve considerably and insurers recognise that, particularly on twin-axle vans, which are attractive to take and easy to move.

Does a service history help?

Yes, and especially the damp check. Damp is excluded as a gradual loss, so a documented history of it being looked for and dealt with protects you when something sudden happens nearby.

What if I change storage site?

Tell the insurer before you move it. Storage is a rated field and a quiet change is the kind of thing that surfaces awkwardly after a theft.
